GPS Positioning Methods Explained

Have you ever wonder what are all the different types of GPS positioning methods that are available in the Nokia 5800 XM means?
This settings can be located at:
Apps > Location > Positioning > Positioning Methods
  1. Integrated GPS
Phone's built in GPS receiver. GPS satellites continuously transmit their location relative to the Earth, and your phone's GPS receiver can calculate its own position if it knows the position of at least three satellites.
  2. Bluetooth GPS
If you do not have integrated GPS or you wish to have GPS reception, you can connect your phone to an external GPS receiver device using Bluetooth link.
  3. Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Assisted GPS is used to retrieve assistance data over a packet data connection (GPRS/3G/3.5G/4G), which assists in calculating the coordinates of your current location when your phone is receiving GPS signals from satellites.

The phone will receives useful satellites information from an assistance data server. With the help of that assisted data, the phone can get the GPS position faster than just using the "Integrated GPS" receiver.

The Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is pre-configured to use the Nokia A-GPS server.
  4. Network-based
Whenever your phone is switched on and in range of your operator's network, it knows which base station (commonly known as the transmitter or mast) it is connected to, and using that information it can approximate your position using this network data. This is an additional help in obtaining a GPS fix, and makes a brief data connection (GPRS/3G/3.5G/4G).
  5. WiFi/Network
No accurate info at the moment...
