Sync Contacts Between Google Contacts & Nokia 5800 XM using SyncML

Ever wonder that it would be nice to synchronize your Nokia 5800 XM phone contacts (phone number, emails, etc...) with Google contacts?

Well, you can actually do that. This is part of the technology of SyncML that was enabled by Google for quite some time now.

  1. Goto
"Settings > Connectivity > Data Transfer > Sync > Options > New sync profile"
    or
"Contacts > Options > Synchronisation > Settings > Create New"
    to start the wizard.
  2. Page 1/10: Profile Name
Any name that floats your boat.
  3. Page 2/10: Server Version
    "1.2"
  4. Page 3/10: Applications in sync
    check only "Contacts" option
  5. Page 4/10: Contacts Database
    "contacts". Must be all lowercase!
  6. Page 5/10: Data bearer
    "Internet"
  7. Page 6/10: Host address
    "https://m.google.com/syncml"
  8. Page 7/10: Server ID
    "Google"
  9. Page 8/10: Username "your gmail address that includes the @gmail.com"
  10. Page 9/10: Password "your gmail access password"
  11. Page 10/10: Activation "Click "Yes" to activate profile"
To start synchronizing with Google Contacts,
goto "Contacts > Options > Synchronisation > Start".

Update [26 JAN 2011]:
At the first sync with Google Contacts, some contacts might be duplicated (both phone & Google Contacts). To clean up, on a PC, go to contacts.google.com and hit the Find Duplicates button. It will put them all together so you can click Merge after reviewing them. Now go back to your phone and tell it to sync again. Sometimes you'll need to do this process twice. => Thanks gggirlgeek

Update [12 NOV 2013]:
This method still works according to Carl Boshoff.

Username: username without the @gmail.com part
Password: Generated password from your "Connected applications and sites" passwords

  2. Hi Thanks for your comment. Though i don't understand Spanish but thanks to Google translate i am able to translate your statement. Yes i did tried Mail for Exchange and setup to sync the my contacts, gmail and calendar from Google. I have discovered that sometimes the sync from Google server is not reliable. Occasionally i did see my data was not sync properly. I am not really sure why. I did write an entry about Google Sync with Mail for Exchange. http://almost-a-technocrat.blogspot.com/2010/08/google-sync-with-mail-for-exchange-on.html

    Yaaay! It worked.

The key things to watch out for are:

    *the small c in contacts
    *your username includes @gmail.com
    *the host address has https://m.google.com/syncml

    Thanks a lot.

Just FYI: It always duplicates half of my contacts the first time. On a PC, just go to contacts.google.com and hit the Find Duplicates button. It will put them all together so you can click Merge after reviewing them. Now go back to your phone and tell it to sync again. Sometimes you'll need to do this process twice.

It normally keeps them pretty clean after that. It's annoying but better than most syncing software I've dealt with.

  5. Hi gggirlgeek,

    Thank you for your comment.

I will make some of the updates on my blog entry to make readers aware of the "watch outs".

Yes, the first time sync will make some of your contacts to have duplicates. A little extra work of cleaning up from Google contacts.

Notice that it will also sync the avatar from the Google contacts to your Nokia contacts picture :)

  11. Hi....

this Works....I was trying to secure my Nokia Contacts since ages...now this process helped me do that.

I had to face few issues while doing this.

    Make sure.
Server ID: is Google (Capital G)
Contacts : is contacts (Lowercase c)
Mind you. It copies only 50 contacts each time. So u have to synchronise till you copied all the contacts dispayed in the Google contact list.
